Project Overview
Walter Energy appointed Mid Glam Construction to carry out the Civils Works necessary to meet new environmental conditions imposed by a revised discharge consent from Environment Agency Wales for their Opencast site in Glynneath, South Wales.
The works involved the construction of three Settlement Lagoons and associated Weir Walls to ensure that sediments contained within flows leaving the site via an adjacent watercourse were kept down to the levels specified in the revised consent.
There were many challenges for the team on this project including difficult access and building structures to close tolerances in extreme weather during the winter months.
Weir walls constructed one hundred metres apart had to be set to within +/- 2mm vertical tolerance to ensure that the scheme design worked hydraulically, that water in the lagoons was not disturbed by incoming flows and that the sediments within the flows had the optimum time to settle out in the lagoons.
Work Scope
- Surface water attenuation
- RC weir walls
- Difficult access
